In the past SanGIS has published transit routes and stops layers developed by SANDAG for their regional transportation planning model. These layers were generalized and updated infrequently. This month SanGIS published new layers for transit stops and routes based on the General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) data. SanGIS has added these layers to the quarterly update list. The new layers, in the Transportation category, are named TRANSIT_ROUTES_GTFS and TRANSIT_STOPS_GTFS.
The General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) defines a common format for public transportation schedules and associated geographic information. GTFS "feeds" allow public transit agencies to publish their transit data and developers to write applications that consume that data in an interoperable way. There are two transit agencies that service San Diego County – the San Diego Metropolitan Transportation System (MTS) and the North County Transportation District (NCTD). SanGIS has developed the transit routes and stops layers based on the GTFS data provided by these two agencies. SanGIS downloads the data from the GTFS Data Exchange and combines the two feeds to form a single layer for routes and stops that include both agencies.
SanGIS published the first datasets on May 4, 2015 and will be updating the layers on a quarterly basis starting with the quarterly updates on July 1, 2015.
